There are no onee-san like this IRL.

Not saying that there aren’t exceptions to this rule, but by the by and large, the last thing any older sister wants to do with her time is hang out with her younger brother’s snotty little friends.

Well…there were good and bad things about this episode, lets say.

(also, just as a note, since the latest episode of technobabble pirates was filled with scientific jargon that I didn’t understand in the least, I’m bundling all the episode reviews together until the plot actually finds its way home from whatever drunken party it was away at. In other words, no Mouretsu Pirates post this week.)

Good Things

  • Romance-wise, the plot’s moving at a nice pace. Ichika thankfully is sharp enough (as in, has a brain, eyes, and those body parts actually work together) to understand that Kaito has an (amazingly fast guys, he even beats Romeo in his 3-day-long true love) crush on her.
  • Even the main characters aren’t as dense as usual. Don’t get me wrong, they’re both like bricks when it comes to sharp observational skills, but they at least both have got the message. Plus, they’ve already sought out advice, instead of muttering about it to themselves for goddamn seasons (Kimi ni Todoke, anyone?)
  • Actual time wise, we’re moving pretty nicely too! Already at the titular summer!
  • Rinon. Never thought I’d say that…orz

Why oh Why Things

  • That goddamn onee-san.
  • That goddamn onee-san scene which took up about a third of the episode.
  • That goddamn misunderstanding about the onee-san.
  • I swear, that goddamn onee-san who served no purpose whatsoever.

Okay, so this is anime. Highscool romcom anime, in fact. So, I’m not really expecting hyper-realism and incredibly complex plot here, but…no. There are some kinds of wish fulfilment I’m okay with, but one’s which are so utterly detached from the true as the character archetype of “onee-san who for some reason wants to hang out with the utterly boring best friend of her younger brother” I can’t stand. Probably in the same way that people who actual have younger sisters hate the imouto archetype. Urgh.

Okay, so like I just said, this isn’t exactly fine literature. So to be honest, theres not really much to write about plot-wise for each episode, so I’ve decided that for each episode, apart from bulleting little notes like the above, I might try to do a mini character study, and the guest for this episode is Tetsurou!

You don’t have to look that unhappy about it… T_T I swear I’ll get better at writing…

What really struck me this episode was how different Tetsurou was when he was just at home/alone with Kai, and when he was with the girls. Actually, more like just Kanna.

The first impression we got of Tetsurou was that he’d be one of the large army of “Best Male Friend of Male Harem Lead”. Basically, either the perverted guy who speaks non-stop about how he will eventually get smacked in the face for being so disgustingly desperate a girlfriend, or otherwise the guy who sprinkles magical charm-sparkles whenever he so much as bats an eyelid. And for that first episode, it kinda seemed like that’s exactly what he was – chatting up teachers to get information on the transfer student, for example.

But, also last episode but particularly in this episode, it’s starting to become clear that he’s not really anything like that. If anything, along with Mio, he’s one of the most level-headed characters in our band of main characters.

I mean, just look at this:

and now look at this:

Well, there’s certainly one person obsessed with getting a girlfriend in these pictures, but it ain’t Tetsurou.

When he’s alone with Kaito, he’s by far the more collected, calm one, offering sound advice to counter Kaito’s weird psychedelic delusions, and bringing his lunch so his poor air headed friend doesn’t pass out. Even at home, he’s the one providing reason when his more, uh, capricious older sister flies home because her husband recorded over a TV show she had wanted to watch. Along with Mio, he seems to be carefully watching over Kanna and her (failing) attempts to get Kaito to notice her (haha, not likely).

But then, that just makes even more of a contrast when he acts like such a clown around Kanna. To be honest, I’m not even sure why. Is it to stop her from noticing how he feels about her? Because she’s more into idiots like Kaito? Because he can’t help it?

I dunno. Maybe it’s a guy thing.

Additional Notes:

  • Please, oh please, let the preview guys not be trolling me. That better be a 100% real Tetsurou x Kanna moment I see.
  • Oh god, angry Ichika is terrifying. Kaito should have hit the floor worshipping.
  • “I don’t swing that way” ahahahahaha
  • Welp, that was way more deep of a post than a light highschool romcom deserved. Is it sad that I’m actually enjoying this show the most out of the three shows I’m covering?
